GETTING TO KNOW Rajendra Patil

Curator's Note

"Rajendra Patil currently resides in the metropolis of Mumbai and teaches at the prestigious Sir J J School of Art. However, he hails from a small village in Maharashtra and he has great respect for the toilof the rural population of India. Which is why under the layers ofcolour-field painting, there lurks the images of tools used by manual labour. The industry of forge, anvil and hammer, bellows and sickle are the main protagonists in Patil’s works. The Vedic myths of his childhood get played out, where they bear the air of an artifact, reminiscent of tablets where text and sign merge. He works in gauche with handmade paper, demanding mediums that are exacting of their creator. According to Patil, abstraction is the core of visual thinking."
